For the past few years, every Cartmel block has an allocated JCR Representative, together with a Kitchen Rep who is responsible for one or two flats within each block.

These college ‘representatives’ are second, third and fourth years, who are there to not only help people settle in, but also to promote our socials and to be the first point of call for any questions or problems ‘Cartmelians’ may have. Even if they are not able to answer the question themselves, they will no doubt know someone who will give the answer.

Before every Freshers week, we begin accepting applications for anyone interested in becoming a Kitchen Rep, with selections and decisions made during Summer term.

We are looking for people who:

  • Will be active! Our Kitchen Reps need to be able to spend some time with their Freshers, especially during the first week. To do this, they’ll need to frequently visit them, while also accompanying them on all JCR socials throughout Fresher’s week. Just like anyone else in the college, there will be absolutely no pressure to consume alcohol during these socials.
  • Will be helpful! Our Kitchen Reps will need to share knowledge and be responsive to any questions or problems your ‘Freshers’ may speak to you about. They will also be required to spend the majority of ‘moving in day’ being a massive help in greeting students to the college and helping them shift luggage to their room. The Kitchen Rep will also be required to prepare a small introductory talk for the early evening of arrival day.
  • Will be friendly! Enough said.

In return, you might well have a few new friends! This position of responsibility will no doubt also make a welcome addition for any C.V too.

Do you have the necessary skills outlined above?

If so, we would love to hear from you. You need to complete a short application form, explaining why you would make a good Kitchen Rep. You may then be invited for a short, informal interview.

The Kitchen Rep application form is now ready to download! Click here to download the form as a PDF file. Please return the forms to the JCR office (A25 Barker House Farm – past Sue’s office) by posting them under the door! Alternatively, please answer the questions via email – send applications to kitchenreps@cartmelcollege.co.uk. Good luck!

The deadline for applications for the 2009/2010 academic year has now passed. Applications for the 2010/2011 academic year will open around May 2010.

Should you have any queries about the position, then do please contact the Vice President of the JCR Exec.

  • I’m on an Uni-exchange at the moment, but will be back in Lancaster in October. Can I still apply?
  • You certainly can. The application requires you to submit a written copy of the application to us, but since this isn’t possible- please email your answers to kitchenreps@cartmelcollege.co.uk. Alternatively, get a friend from Lancaster…to write up your answers on your behalf…and ask them to pop it under the door of the JCR Office.

  • Yes!! By all means feel free to do so….

  • Not really. But you will be required to venture onto Campus quite a bit during the first week especially to meet your Flat and to help/encourage them to attend socials….

However, you do get the opportunity of being able to attend the socials during the Fresher’s week, meet new friends…and also have the privilege of putting such an experience on your C.V. Oh….and from day one, it is quite likely you’ll get your own Kitchen-Rep branded white t-shirt too!
