17 Again

This film has echoes of 13 Going On 30 about it, but in reverse. Lead character Mike doesn’t have the life he wants and so gets another chance to re-live his final high school year in the hope that he can fix his relationships with his children and wife.

The majority of it is rather predictable, but with the young and incredibly good looking Zac Efron as the lead in this film it’s sure to make itself a lot of money from all the teenage girls who will go to see it (myself included…).

Because the film’s primary audience will be girls lured in by Efron, most guys will be thinking “why do I want to waste an hour and a half of my life watching That-Idiot-From-High-School- Musical?” There is, however, the pull of Friends star Matthew Perry playing the older version of Mike which interested a few of my male friends. But, it has to be said, if that’s your only reason for going to see this film then you will be disappointed. Perry only appears for fifteen minutes near the beginning and five minutes at the end, making him more of a cameo appearance than anything else.

Most of the film’s humour comes from Mike’s weird, geeky friend Ned and if you concentrate on the funny parts of the movie as opposed to the almost incestuous scene between the seventeen year old Mike and his daughter then you will probably find this film quite enjoyable.

Even if you aren’t Efron’s biggest fan, when you see him getting out of his car post-makeover, the biggest hater can become a drooling wreck.
