In between issues of this term’s Griffins, a social craze has slowly spread amongst the flats of Cartmel. Specifically, the concept of Dare Nights – where teams of slightly inebriated students complete various challenges to earn points and win prizes! (Or, rather, a washing up bottle covered in tin foil.)
Dom caught up with madcap creator Helen Reid to talk about the birth of the Dare Night. She thought that “after some nights out – which can sometimes be a bit boring… good, but boring – I was thinking what could liven it up a bit, and just came up with doing lots of challenges.
“I was speaking to my friend Sam Hinsley about it and she said that it was like the episode ‘I Will Dare’ from One Tree Hill, where they do a dare night in that, and that’s where the name came from. We got some possible challenges and ideas (helped along by Mike Clarke), and that’s basically how it came about.
“I was going to do one every term – sort of a termly event, but loads of people said they couldn’t wait, so there will be another one soon!”
Here are some of the dares that appeared last time, along with some special additions from other nights…
- Get a picture in both Wetherspoons
- Buy tampons and hand them out to people
- Find the Racoon (interpret as you will)
- Space-hop around Barker House Farm
- Hug County Tree
- Buy someone you don’t know a drink and then hold a conversation about Pokémon with them
- Make a hat
- Flirt with the Pizzetta staff and see if you can get anything for free
- Lick someone’s face
- Hug a Porter
- Ask flat 2 of your block if you can hoover their floor (bring the hoover to the door)
- Make a human pyramid. A point for each layer (but don’t make it too big – health and safety)
- Swap all your clothes with another team member (apart from underwear – unless you want to)
- Ask at least ten different students if they know who George Fox is and where and when you can meet him
- Get in a dryer
- Get someone you don’t know to come out of their flat and have a picture taken with you
- Drink at least three different colour drinks
- Acquire three things that are not yours – or which belong to any other person doing the challenge
- If getting a free bus back, ask if they will stamp/ write on your forehead
- Get in a bin
- Get under a bed
- End the night by eating a cake
- Tie someone who isn’t in your team to a post (if you don’t know them it may be an idea to untie them afterwards – we take no responsibility for anything!)
- All team members walk backwards into the club after paying
- Take a picture of a rabbit
- Walk around Central shouting and dancing the YMCA song three times during the night
