Twilight is based on the New York Times bestseller of the same name written by Stephenie Meyer.
When quiet, clumsy Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) trades her life in to live in the small town of Forks, Washington with her father, she expects to be faced with misery and loneliness but instead finds her soulmate in the bewitching Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). As events unfold, she goes on to discover his dark secret: Edward is a vampire.
Even though the lighting is dark, the majority of the plot isn’t. With Bella and Edward’s love story being the focal point, the film turns out to be more Romeo & Juliet than Dracula, and is sure to leave the majority of girls swooning (even if this is partly due to Pattinson’s stunning good looks). Because of this boys may be left disappointed, bar an unusually action orientated baseball scene and the denouement fight.
The film works through its successful Hollywood conventions: good looking actors, romance, action and some picturesque landscapes thrown in for good measure. However, its engaging and unconventional romance story – the fact that they are separated in age by almost a century and the glaringly obvious fact that she is human and he is a creature who by instinct thirsts after her blood – makes this film enjoyable and leaves the viewer asking the question “but how can this possibly end happily, if they can’t properly be together?” Overall, Twilight is a must-see for all those who read the books.
