Based on a league system, Cartmel had already played three matches last term, winning two and drawing one. However, a new term saw a new team with mainly defenders fielded. First up was a distinctly lacklustre Graduate team, unsurprisingly a man short as, once again, they have failed to elect a Sports Rep. Sympathy? Not a chance of it as Cartmel went to town and destroyed Grad. 6-0 up at half-time and Ady asked for double figures. Double figures were precisely what Cartmel got, running out 11-0 winners.
Full of confidence for the next match, Cartmel were in a strong position and looking for two victories to win the league. Then the wheels fell off the Cartmel express. Not having established strikers cost them dearly as they could only draw 2-2 with the newly re-labelled Gz.
For all their attacking frailties, Cartmel will know they should have taken Gz to the cleaners but the draw left Cartmel needing to win all their matches to take the crown.
Going down 1-3 to County left Cartmel with their pride severely wounded. Being our traditional rivals, County will be happy with the victory and they deserved it as Cartmel failed to take their chances. Fylde were last up and the score line does no justice to a spirited Cartmel performance. Fylde needed to win to take the league from Bowland and eventually ran out 2-3 victors.
Cartmel finished 5th with 7 points when it could so easily have been 1st or 2nd. Lessons learned for next year but the points will come in handy come the final reckoning. Congratulations and my personal thanks go to Dan Burwell, Phil Taylor, Martin Cox, Noel Wright, Tom Spivey, and Jake Gommon. Well done lads, your college is proud of you.
