Freshers Guide Header Image

On Campus – Cartmel
Most freshers choose to live on campus in their first year. This makes it easy to get to know people, and is handy for getting to know the campus. If you wish to stay in Cartmel College accommodation again for the next academic year, you are welcome to apply again, although accommodation is not guaranteed for continuers. Contact the College Residence Officer (Edwina Greenfield) for any queries about on campus accommodation. She is available weekdays in her office – turn left after entering the porters lodge. Alternatively call internally on Ext. 94970 or email e.greenfield@lancaster.ac.uk.

LUSU Housing

Cable Street
1-3 Cable Street, immediately opposite the bus station and taxi rank, offers accommodation in 3, 4 and 5 bedroom self contained flats.

Combining old with new, part of the complex is a sympathetic conversion of a pair of Grade 2 listed Georgian townhouses, whilst the remainder is purpose built, designed to blend into the historical surroundings. Cable street is prefect for students wishing to live in a student community off campus central in to key bus/train/taxi services, supermarket, shops, pubs and clubs.

Cable street fills up fast, so it is best to get your name down as soon as possible. For more information see the Cable Street website.

Food Shopping tips

Markets
A market is held in town every Wednesday and Saturday. Great to get cheap fruit and vegetables.

Butchers
Many butchers are dotted around town, especially in the indoor market. Try going to the butchers for your meat. It will cost alot less than at supermarkets or shopping on campus.

On campus Shopping

Central
The nearest shop to South West campus. Great for when you have run out of food, and need to grab a couple of bits and bobs for tea. Can be a bit pricy! I wouldn’t advise doing a full shop there! All in all a good convenience store, open everyday ’till 11pm (during term time) which is prefect for when you get those late evening chocolate cravings! Central also do mobile top ups, hot drinks, and sell alcohol for all those flat parties!

Spar
The campus supermarket. Sells almost everything you need – but not recommended for your weekly shopping because like any other Spar, it’s expensive.

Spar, Edward Roberts Court, Lancaster University

Waterstones Bookshop
The first place to go for course textbooks. Waterstones usually has a large stock of all recommended books. Good if you need the books straight away. Can be quite expensive compared to other shops but that’s the price you pay for convenience! My tip would be to check out www.amazon.co.uk to see if you can get your books cheaper. Students also use LUSU student exchange to sell there old books at low prices.
