Editorial Welcome

Hullo everyone! I’m Dom Stroud, one half of the new magazine editorial team. After weeks and weeks worth of planning, designing, meetings, photo-taking, writing, and a last-minute crunch that gave me no other choice but to use a LOLcat image, your first brand-spanking new issue of The Griffin is here. And, if I do say [...]

A Griffin From The Ashes

Cartmel: the quiet college. The boring college. All names we’ve been branded with in the past. Although spirit within Cartmel has always been high, there’s nothing more demoralising than for other colleges to blank you. While Pendle may take it up the arse, and no-one is sure where Grizedale’s bar has gone, Cartmel doesn’t even [...]

Cartmel Gets Fury-ous

It was week 2. It was a Friday. And, damn it, it was furious. After worries that the student-favourite social of last year would never get to return due to the credit crunch, Prime Minister Brown went and gave us the gift of a VAT cut, and et voila, Friday Fury becomes affordable once again. [...]

5th Havin’ You

For those who live there, Manchester’s 5th Avenue nightclub is a staple of most student nights out with cheap drinks, sing-your-heart out indie tunes and a lively but laidback atmosphere. So, it was with just a little bit of excitement that the bus set off from Cartmel on Monday week three, ready to show them [...]

Floating In A Cartmel Sky

Any social that starts with shiny red balloons and ends with prizes is bound to be a winner – and 99 Red Balloons didn’t disappoint. Once again the Cartmel spirit showed itself as we started the evening in The Winning Post, where, to get us in the mood, we were accompanied by the cheery sound [...]

Voulez-Vous Coucher Avec Moi?

Okay everyone, the cat’s finally out of the bag – this year’s Extrav theme has been voted on by you guys and the results are now in! You have chosen that the theme for next term’s mega-party will be… MOULIN ROUGE! For those of you who haven’t been to one before, each year every college [...]

Coming To A Sabb Near You

Most of us know what’s going on in the day-to-day life of Cartmel. JCR posters, word of mouth, Facebook messages and so on keep us up to date with the latest events. But on a wider scale, changes are happening currently in the university that maybe not everyone knows about – namely, the upcoming Sabbatical [...]

A-V Tech Elected

Recently, the JCR position of A-V Tech came up for grabs in a week 4 by-election. Rose Grant- Muller, Heather Mann, and James Davies all put themselves forward for the position, each putting up a strong Hustings speech and responding well to extremely tough questioning at the Exec’s General Meeting. In true election day style, [...]

Easy Tiger…

Hey Cartmel, we’re your new Ed & Welfare team, Tom and Sian, and we’re here to let you know about our fantabulous campaign that we have going on right now! Some of you may have noticed the new decorations on the bar if you have ventured down there lately; it’s basically a drink awareness campaign. [...]

Cartmel Gets Patriotic

Hey there sports fans! It’s been an exciting start to the Lent term for sports in Cartmel. To begin, I’d like to send apologies as I’ve not been able to get the results from Cartmel’s teams, but I can at least tell you all about the Carter Shield and the new, exciting Patriot’s Cup. The [...]

College Council

Our job is to attend College Council meetings with any feedback or opinions we have from Cartmel students. We are there to vocalise these views and to take note on agenda items of interest, which we then relay to the college.
