Meathop

Meathop Moss is one of the best remaining examples of a raised mire in south Cumbria. It was one of the first nature reserves to be set up in the country. The importance of the site was recognised at the beginning of the 20th century when a lease was secured by the Society for the Promotion of Nature Reserves. Cumbria Wildlife Trust took over the lease in 1963. Four fields were purchased in 1998 with funds from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
